Sambal Bawang is an Indonesian sambal made primarily from garlic and red chilies, often blended with shallots and tomatoes. The result is a spicy, aromatic condiment with a rich, savoury profile. It can be used as a dipping sauce or paired with other dishes to add a bold kick to any meal.

  1. Blend the chillies, shallots and garlic.
  2. In a hot pan, add in oil and sauté the blended ingredients . 
  3. Don’t be shy with the oil. We need a good amount of oil to fully cook the chilli paste until the ‘raw’ taste is gone.
  4. Add in the salt, sugar and seasonings.
  5. The result of the sambal should be a jammy consistency.
  6. Enjoy the sambal with just about anything. It is so versatile!
